3 Pre-Netflix Fic Recs

I had been waiting for a Netflix docu burst à la F1 Drive to Survive for all of 2022. I watched (and participated) in the F1-fic boom as a life-long fan of the racing series, and Cycling, with its numerous riders and propensity for narratives was overdue. I spent quite a bit of time going through some of the fics in the small fandom and saving some gems, and its those gems that I wanted to highlight here.

1.

Summary: ITV4's Tour de France coverage is interspersed with incessant adverts for the Donkey Sanctuary – and other, equally tear-jerking charitable causes. But why will no one think of the riders?

Reccer's Notes: I love the challenges and possibilities that short fics provide, and this is a fic that captures that perfectly. Written as a parody of PSAs, this fic has hilarious and clever lines that will have you clutching your sides. I would post my favourites here, but that would end up spoiling half the fic! XD

Reccer's Notes: 2022 was the year I started consistently watching cyclocross, and this fic really scratched my itch for cyclocross specific fic that wasn't about WvA or MvdP. It's an excellent fluff + getting together fic centred around the giant rubber ducks given out for the Badkamers podiums at the time (personally, the change to the big duck plushes is a loss in my eyes). It's cute and fun and you don't need much background aside from Eli Iserbyt being a force to be reckoned with at the time (at least when the Big Three were away).

Summary: Geraint has built himself up a reputation within the team – super domestique, yellow jersey-warmer for Chris Froome, everyone’s favourite Welshman, and the expert on the ins and outs of Froomey’s bed. That is, until he's thrown into the position of leading man and he's got to carry on the traditions.

Reccer's Notes: For people familiar with the trope, this is sort of Winner's Room-adjacent without being a straight copy. Personally, I like this better than Winner's Room because keeping it in the team (as Luke says in the fic) feels like a more logical way to worldbuild and furthers the leader/domestique dynamic that already exists. Aside from the solid worldbuilding decisions to set up this tradition, the character voices in this fic are amazing, and the dialogue flows really well. This is one of those fics that's worth rereading time and time again.

Somehow, these two things save the galaxy.

Reccer's Notes: This is the funniest fix-it you'll ever read. A shining example of crack treated seriously, it takes the fake clone gag and runs with it to a hilarious yet logical conclusion. You'll be laughing along with all of the characters at the antics they'll get up to, but you'll also be laughing incredulously at how those antics help circumvent bureaucracy and well, save the galaxy.

Fic In A Box 2022 Wrap-Up

Reveals for ficinabox have finally taken place!

I had an amazing time with this exchange. It was my first time doing an exchange over 1k words and I think the format made it super conducive to my success in completing it. Swaps and being able to swap assignments for pinch-hits made it feel less stressful while also still working towards that 10k total. While I did have to default a bit of my assignment, I was able to pick up another pinch-hit so that I was able to meet the 10k in fic + equivalent :D

This gave me a lot of confidence, so time willing, I think I'm going to aim for completing the triple crown this round. I've already picked up a pinch hit for fffx so I'll do my best!

Blaseball (Video Games)
Obsessed with the garages music, so anything related to these characters based off one of their songs is an instant yes for me. For Parker specifically, anything to do with the ILB Semi-Centennial or S24 would be great, feel free to make it as dark/horror as you like. For Jaylen and Mike, anything from when the book was opened and Jaylen burned to Mike going into the shadows and beyond. The two of them have a long history and I think it would be great to see a snippet of that. For Alto, I would love anything that takes place during her soloing for the Moist Talkers in S23 and 24.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Forsyth and Python are my favourite ship, honestly anything involving them is in my wheelhouse. If you want to do a trick for this one, I'd prefer it to take place in canon, solely because there's so many opportunities for them to get hurt in canon. Also, if you want to write something based off Python's ending where Forsyth dies (the one that says it's almost like he was possessed by Forsyth) I'd be totally okay with that.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
I love Eirika/Seth and the princess and her loyal knight trope. Aside from that, anything regarding the nominated characters in relation to the plot of the game (as in expansion of support convs, pre/post-game relationships) would be amazing. I also wouldn't mind them in an AU variation, so long as there are still fantasy-like elements (as in, urban fantasy is okay).

Formula 1 RPF
Enemies to lovers is my absolute favourite for Checo/Esteban, the entire 2017/18 season is such a good setting for that, but I also wouldn’t mind something set in the current season with that loaded history in mind.

For Checo/Max, I love their cute teasing interactions, so a sort of friends to lovers/acquaintances to lovers vibe is better.

Kamen Rider Build
I am always up for anything friendship based regarding the nascita crew. Feel free to have them interact in different facets than the show. You can have it take place in the new world or during the series, whichever is preferable to you.

Love Live! School Idol Project
Honestly I love µ's, so art of them in any of their significant outfits (PVs) would be amazing. You don't have to include all the members, just one of them in a PV outfit would be great.

Pandora Hearts
I’m only really familiar with the manga, but I love it to death.

Elliot's death broke me, so if you want to go that way and break me again or go the opposite way and save him, I'm good with either. There's a lot of angsty stuff you could go down if you want to write about the Jack and Oz relationship instead, or sweet if you want to go about the Nightrays brothers' relationship.

Pocket Monsters | Pokemon (Main Video Game Series)
Red and Blue, the eternal rivalry. There's so much you could write about this, but personally I would prefer something set either during Red's stay on Mount Silver or their trip to Alola.

Ted Lasso
I’d love a short day at the pitch kind of fic, or maybe even a pre-game/post-game rituals fic. Anything about the players getting to hang out on their own is interesting, I don't really have a preference for whoever you chose, so feel free to have fun with it.
